November Contest Madness...

Hey there tech heads...I assume that most of you follow the blog because you enjoy seeing the build process unfold in front of your eyes. Well, as most of you can bear witness, it takes a variety of tools to accomplish the fabrication process of a high end bicycle in an efficient and consistent manner.

Today, I added another piece of tooling that cuts down on my fabrication time and increases the quality of my product. It's something I've needed for a while but just have not taken the time to make; today was the day.

So, let's see how intuitive y'all are. The first one to post a comment that correctly describes the intent of this item and how it works will win a free Groovy Tee and sticker, mailed to your door. Of course, you gotta be a registered reader/follower to play :)

Here we go...

The first pic shows the ingredients for the item, can you visualize what it is to become?

Some quick fabrication time elapsed and we have the finished product...a view from the side
from the top, note the lateral slot and the small nub on the inside end.

Bottoms up... an enclosed end cap and a mitered plate to note in this shot. The other end of the tube is open.
I'll use this little guy every month, so those of you that are familiar with what goes on in the shop will have a head start. Have fun, we'll do the big reveal later tonight :)
Good luck,
rody
PS...Hubby, you don't get to play as you heard about it on the phone last night ;)

Tool to align end caps for welding on to the grip section of LUV handles.

I am going to guess that it is used to hold the drop out of the fork for welding.

Genius looking mechanical dog polisher Rody! I agree w most others it's got to help you get those Luv's out the door faster. Since your making tools to make production more efficient does this mean I can have my frame by Christmas this year? ha ha.......

does it slide over the grip section of the luv handle allowing you to drop in the endcap and secure with a tack weld than slide out the grip section and finish up the weld?

still can't figure out the flat piece of steel with the dropout looking cut out, other than allowing you to clamp it in your milling vice so it wont turn during the tack weld

To add to Scooter's description: The flat piece with the cutout fits into the center of the bar while the end lines up the cap.

Ohh, you guys are sooo close. Here's a little hint;

it's not needed for for steel work, but for another material application.

cheers,

rody

Wait, wait, I've got this one - it's a jig for welding on a titanium Schwinn style kickstand mount. What do I win?

;)

Is it for welding on the end caps to ti luvs? The 7/8" extension is a slip fit into the smaller diameter tube and is purged from the open end. The argon escapes through a pre-drilled hole that will later be covered up by the center of the luv bar...the argon fills the cavity in the larger part of the tool, keeping the welded area cleaner than possible without using some other damming device. The hole in the top allows torch access and the slot allows some argon to escape around the hot area of the freshly welded endcap.

If I'm correct, give someone else the shirt and sticker. I already have one of each (and the shirt is in my regular rotation...love dark shirts for welding)

Uh, what he said.
